Building Communities Via The Transformative Power of Art
Bowery Art Collective (BAC) is a 501(c)(3) public charity serving as both an artist incubator and a cultural exchange hub for emerging creatives. BAC offers a safe and supportive space where high school and college students can showcase and sell their work while gaining hands-on experience in the gallery and art business. Through mentorship and real-world exposure, participants not only develop their artistic careers but also engage in meaningful cultural and social impact—using art as a tool for education and healing. Artists can join the collective through professional development tracks or by becoming active members involved in planning community-based exhibitions. At its core, BAC’s mission is to use the power of art to bridge divides and foster unity.
Our first student show, “Young America,” took place in July 2020 as a virtual gallery show with an online auction for 30 students. With several artworks selling at the auction, It became clear that the Bowery Art Collective could profoundly impact the careers of emerging artists. As such, we spent the next year collecting student art, nurturing artists, and building a community of mentors and opportunities for our artists.
In March 2022, Bowery held its first in-person exhibition, “Hope,” to celebrate the end of pandemic restrictions and the gallery's relocation to Metuchen, NJ. The first in-person show included artists from the original NY Collective and new artists from New Jersey. The show featured 50 pieces from 29 artists, of which seven went on to sell works, with all proceeds going directly to the students. One of the artists, Jenny Chen, was discovered by a retail gallery, Papillon & Co., in Metuchen, which exhibited and sold her artwork after this opening. Locally, Metuchen High School artists were given the opportunity to exhibit outside of their school for the first time.
In June 2022, Bowery held an exhibition for the Metuchen High School AP art class. We hosted and worked closely with Metuchen High School AP art students to facilitate timely art drop-offs, adherence to themes, curating displays, and advising on entertainment. The students organized a 10-piece HS jazz band from various high schools to play the show. Bowery Art Collective provided food and invited essential people from local art establishments and universities. The AP students, who needed to keep the artwork for their college portfolio, made prints of their pieces, which generated hundreds of dollars during and after the event.
As of April 2025, after five years of programming, BAC is expanding its focus to include a deepening community engagement through our exhibits. We are introducing art experiences that center on diverse perspectives, collaborative creation, bridge-building, open dialogue, cultural preservation, and reimagining conventional knowledge. Each exhibit is designed to foster connection and understanding—encouraging non-divisive communication and promoting positive social change through the transformative power of art.
